Developing a stem-cell derived kidney for end-stage renal disease
About the project:
The long-term objective of this disease team is to develop a transplantable auxiliary kidney from human pluripotent stem cells. Such an engineered tissue would need to provide renal replacement superior to dialysis and with fewer complications.
The initial target population would be elderly (>70 years) end stage renal failure patients for whom dialysis is counter-indicated and for whom a transplant is not available. If successful, this may be more widely applicable for a wider end stage renal failure patient population.
